GREEN; BROOKS CLAIM SALEM IOFS LOOT

August 29, 2010 - Salem, IN -
The International Outlaw Figure 8 Series ( IOFS ) journeyed to the Salem Speedway on Sunday afternoon to showcase both their Outlaw and Front Wheel Drive divisions. The visit to Salem marked the second and final appearance for the IOFS to Salem in 2010.

Indianapolis, IN driver, Brad Brooks, made quick work of his competition to claim the IOFS 20-lap Front Wheel Drive feature event. Due to a blind draw, Brooks was forced to start from the tenth starting position but worked his way into the lead well before the halfway point. Brooks used a hard-charging driving style to pick cars off one-by-one. The win was the first-ever IOFS FWD event ever held at Salem and the first IOFS victory for Brooks. Brooks was followed to the line by Josh Tharp and current point leader Rickie Tharp.

In the 50 lap IOFS Outlaw ' Figure 8 Showdown ' event, Chris Green took the lead on lap one and never looked back. Green was originally scheduled to start from the inside of row one. But, a lap one altercation sent Bowling Green, KY driver, Richard Dickens, into the wall would result in Green being the new pole sitter. After a lengthy red flag to care for Dickens, Green would lead the first circuit. Green would lead all fifty laps without much pressure from second running Chris Harmon. Harmon followed Green throughout much of the race with little pressure. Harmon had his hands full with 2009 IOFS champion, Doug Greig, who appeared at times to be held up by Harmon. Greig showed Harmon his nose several times with heavy resistance. The veteran Harmon ran his line to perfection forcing the faster Greig to settle for third the remainder of the event. The outside lane appeared to be slick forcing Harnon and Greig to watch Green set the pace for entire event. The win was the second career IOFS win for Green.

Dane Laster was awarded the Amsoil ' Hard Charger ' award presented by authorized dealer, Elmer Shaeffer. Shawn Cullen won the Highest Finishing Stock award while Gary Bedell was awarded the EDCO Welding fast qualifier with a lap of 19.967 seconds.

FIGURE 8 SHOWDOWN SUNDAY; START TIMES MOVED EARLIER
SALEM, IN, August 23 –
The International Outlaw Figure 8 Series (IOFS) headlines six different divisions headed to Salem Speedway on Sunday for the inaugural “Figure 8 Showdown.
The August 29th event marks the second Salem Speedway appearance for the IOFS teams in 2010. The first visit in late June proved highly successful with a good spectator turnout, as well as a full field of cars.
“We’re certainly looking forward to the return visit by the International Outlaw Figure 8 Series,” said Salem Speedway general manager Richard Deaton. “We received nothing but positive comments from the fans and competitors following the June race.”
Rich Fenwick of Indianapolis put his name in the Salem Speedway record book with his victory in that historic first-ever figure 8 event on the new quarter-mile infield track.
“It was certainly a day to remember in the history of Salem Speedway,” said Deaton, as he reflected on the first figure 8 race held at Salem. “A real positive was watching fan reaction and seeing how passionate they are about figure 8 racing.”
Joining the International Outlaw Figure 8 Series on Sunday will be the IOFS Front wheel Drive Figure 8 division, Lucas Oil Super Stocks, Dave & Deb’s Winner’s Circle Street Stocks, Salem Speedway Pure Stocks and Front Wheel Drive oval stocks.
“This is the most divisions we have had at Salem for a single show in a number of years,” said Deaton. “It should be a great afternoon of racing with a diverse field of cars and drivers, featuring competition on both the high banks and infield short-track.”
Fenwick is expected to defend his Salem victory and will be joined by a host of IOFS regulars, including current point leader Gary Bedell of Greenfield, Ind. Other top IOFS regulars expected include R.J. Norton Jr. of Indianapolis, who finished second to Fenwick on June 27th, Doug Greig of Indianapolis, Jesse and Ben Tunny of Fairland, Ind., Jeff Swinford of Noblesville and Charlie Hargraves of Indianapolis, among others.
IOFS officials are also expecting several Kentuckiana drivers to show up and compete against the IOFS regulars on Sunday. The June race at Salem had a good turnout of “southern cars” as Daniel Glover, Butch Winters, Tony Anderson, Richard Dickens and Jimmie Vincent were on had to represent the Kentuckiana area.
The tight battle for the 2010 Lucas Oil Super Stock championship is set to continue on Sunday, between Frank Kimmel II of Borden, Ind., and Tony Johnson of Louisville. Kimmel, the defending series champion, leads Johnson by a scant three points (406-403).
Chris French of Vine Grove, Ky., (369), David Frizzell of Jeffersonville (361) and Jerry Norris of Louisville (344) round out the top five in the current Super Stock standings.
Winston Wood of Bloomington continues to pace the field in the Dave & Deb’s Winner’s Circle Street Stock standings. The Ball State University sophomore leads defending series champion Brian Bayer of Birdseye, Ind., by 19 points (406-387) heading into Sunday’s race.
Tim Clemons of New Albany (375), who recorded his first career Salem win on July 31, Jay Baker of French Lick (364) and Craig Rogers of Sellersburg (352) round out the top five in the Street Stock standings.
Four Pure Stock races at Salem Speedway in 2010 have produced four different winners with Mike Kestler of Louisville, Travis Rogers of Charlestown, Troy Phillips of Louisville and Ricky Ricketts of Borden being the victors.
Bill Grant of Clarksville has won two of three Front Wheel Drive oval races in 2010 at Salem with Chris Cobb of New Albany, also having a victory.
Spectator gates open at 10 a.m. on Sunday, with practice at 10:00, qualifications at 12:45, and the first race at 2 p.m. (EDT).
Advance general admission tickets are priced at $12 for adults and teens and $3 for children (age 7-12). Kids, age 6 and under, are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Advance tickets are available at the Speedway office or by calling 812-883-6504 or toll free 1-888-246-7223.
